It was thinking of this heritage that moved me so much when I was sworn in as a United States senator. If youâve seen the video of my swearing-in ceremony on YouTube, Iâm sure you noticed that I cried my way through it. I canât apologize. I have a sense of what it cost pioneer conservative women for me to get where I am. I definitely have a sense of what all women have had to endure through the centuries, simply being women in a society that would not let them be heard. I am grateful for every speech, every article, every book, every vote, and every casual conversation that changed the culture and allowed women to achieve. Somebody finally decided to âremember the ladies,â as Abigail Adams charged her husband, and it has made all the difference in the United States and the western world.
Conservatism is not the rich and powerful desperately clinging to their privilege. It is not a movement devoted to erecting barriers against the poor, the foreign, or the disadvantaged. It is a philosophy of freedom. It is what works. It is the counsel of the ages telling us the lessons of what has been tried, what has proven successful, and what has failed and brought human misery. It is the philosophy born of standing on the shoulders of thinking giants and carrying their vision into the future.
This is a bit of the noble heritage of conservatism. Now, it is time for all conservatives, both men and women, to win hearts and minds to this philosophy of freedom in our time.
